Give us some background to where you're from?
I was raised in Corona, California, not too far from San Diego. My educational journey led me to The University of California Riverside, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in business. I spent a significant amount of time in San Diego during my college years, I found myself drawn to its charm, beaches and Mexican food. After graduation, I made a beeline for this beautiful city, and I've been grateful to call San Diego home ever since.
What inspired the founding of Sayre Jewelry and its unique name?
My venture into the jewelry business was inspired by my work at Pacific Manufacturing. While spending extra time at work out of true enjoyment, I realized I needed a creative outlet outside of my job. Initially, my interest was in learning about jewelry, but a random encounter with welding machines at The Atlanta Mart trade show sparked my curiosity for permanent jewelry. Subsequently, I delved into research, acquired a welding machine a month later, and embarked on my jewelry journey. Fast forward a year and a half later, my SUV is now nicknamed MJU for “Mobile Jewelry Unit.”
As for the name, 'Sayre' is my maiden name, pronounced "Say-ur." Sayre holds a special place in my heart—it's not just a name, but a connection to my roots and a reminder of where I come from. Incorporating this part of my identity felt like a fitting tribute.
What are the most popular jewelry pieces among Sayre customers, and why?
Our dainty 14k gold filled and solid gold chains are definitely crowd favorites. There's just something timeless about gold that never goes out of style. Our customers particularly love the dainty figaro and sphere designs—they're delicate yet make a statement on their own, perfect for everyday wear. And lately, our reflection chain has been catching everyone's eye, radiating those summer vibes that we’re all currently craving.
How does Sayre engage with the local community in San Diego?
Engaging with the San Diego community is something we're truly passionate about and the amazing weather in San Diego makes this possible year around! You can find us every week at local markets in Ocean Beach and Gaslamp, soaking up the vibrant atmosphere and connecting with fellow artisans and food vendors. It's these face-to-face interactions that really make a difference and allow us to build genuine relationships with our customers. We also collaborate with local businesses, participating in pop-ups and events across San Diego, creating meaningful connections within the community.
Can you share a funny or heartwarming anecdote from your time at Sayre?
One of the most heartwarming aspects of running Sayre Jewelry is witnessing the connections that our pieces celebrate. Whether it's best friends bonding through the permanent jewelry experience, siblings symbolizing their connection with meaningful charms, couples celebrating special milestones with a custom necklace, or a trio of generations picking out matching bracelets, these moments remind me that Sayre isn't just about creating beautiful pieces; it's about celebrating the special moments and relationships in people's lives. It's about forging connections and creating lasting memories. And for me, that's what makes the days at Sayre magical.
As the Director of Sales & Marketing of Pointe Studio, how do you balance your responsibilities between two thriving businesses?
Balancing my responsibilities between Pacific Manufacturing and my jewelry business has been a journey of establishing routines and applying effective time management strategies.
Over the past 4+ years, I've established a solid routine at Pacific Manufacturing, which serves as a framework for managing my time between the two businesses. I've learned to navigate around this structure to devote time and attention to growing my jewelry business.
I've taken the time management skills I use at Pacific Manufacturing and applied them to my work at Sayre. For instance, I now assign specific tasks to certain days of the week, providing a clear focus and structure to my schedule. Monday nights, for example, are dedicated to payroll and reviewing the upcoming event schedule for the week. This overarching structure helps prevent tasks from feeling overwhelming, provides clarity on where to start, and makes sure that my top tasks are accounted for.
By establishing and consistently implementing a productive routine, I feel equipped to take on the demands of both businesses. I've come to accept that productivity levels may fluctuate from week to week, and I'm learning to be more forgiving with myself. I trust that with continued effort, additional productive habits will form over time.
How has your experience at Pointe Studio influenced your approach to marketing Sayre Jewelry?
My experience at Pointe Studio has underscored the significance of branding, which has contributed to shaping Sayre’s marketing strategy. Focusing on creating a cohesive brand identity has been a priority from the outset, with ongoing efforts to incorporate additional B2C and B2B marketing initiatives.
Can you share any cross-promotional strategies you've implemented between Pointe Studio and Sayre Jewelry?
We incorporated Sayre jewelry into Pointe Studio's Spring Summer 2024 photoshoot, enhancing the overall aesthetic with our dainty pieces. This collaboration not only elevated the styling but also provided Sayre with amazing photography. I have always been a fan of Pointe Studio’s visual aesthetic and was excited to be a part of the shoot in this way.
Are there any collaborative efforts between Sayre Jewelry and Pointe Studio that have emerged due to your unique position within both companies?
Yes, there has been! The complementary nature of Sayre and Pointe Studio has paved the way for collaborative efforts, including joint events and promotional activities. For example, Pointe Studio hosted a Pilates by the Bay event recently with Gone Bananas, a San Diego bikini store, and after the Pilates class we had an in store-shopping experience where Sayre did a permanent jewelry pop-up.
Can you share any instances where your experiences at Pointe Studio have directly influenced decision-making processes at Sayre Jewelry?
My experiences at Pointe Studio have informed my decision-making processes at Sayre, particularly in areas such as branding, sales strategies, and retail expansion. Working at Pacific Manufacturing has shined a light on the different opportunities a brand can have. I’ve been able to help build out the business to business sales for Pointe Studio where we sell to stores and studios including but not limited to Pilates, barre and yoga studios. I have always enjoyed B2B sales and think there are so many benefits for a brand when selling through this channel. I knew that I also wanted my brand to eventually enter the wholesale market which has helped in positioning Sayre from the get-go.
With your perspective from Pointe Studio, how do you navigate challenges in the jewelry industry for Sayre, and vice versa?
Embracing a 'Don’t Fear Failure' mindset, a value instilled by my experience at Pacific Manufacturing, has empowered me to navigate challenges in both industries.
I approach challenges in both industries with a willingness to experiment and try new approaches. This aligns with the ethos of 'Don’t Fear Failure,' where I am open to trying new things until finding what works. I believe that failure is just one step closer to success, and this mindset allows me to adapt and innovate in response to industry challenges in both roles.
How do you envision the future relationship between Sayre Jewelry and Pointe Studio evolving?
Looking ahead, I would love to see nothing more than continued collaboration and growth between Sayre and Pointe Studio, fueled by shared values and complementary strengths.
